Bhaderwah/Doda, August 28: Two days of relentless rainfall have turned Bhaderwah and Doda into disaster zones this week. On August 26, nearly 100 mm of rain caused Neeru Nallah to overflow, sending muddy torrents rushing through homes and temples. Families were forced to flee in the middle of the night, clutching only a few belongings as floodwaters rose.

By morning, debris had buried houses and roads. “We heard a roar, then everything shook. My house collapsed within minutes,” said a resident from Bhaderwah who is now sheltering with relatives. Another villager recalled: “We escaped with our lives, but everything we built is gone. Now we only wait for help.”

The same day, a cloudburst struck Doda’s Bhalesa area, washing away houses and leaving at least three people dead. Landslides blocked the Jammu–Srinagar highway, cutting off the region from vital supplies. Locals described the sound of water and rocks as “like a mountain breaking apart.

The situation worsened on August 27, as rivers Tawi and Ravi swelled above danger marks. Schools were shut, red alerts were declared across multiple districts, and rescue teams were deployed.

The aftermath has left behind collapsed homes, broken roads, and grieving families—yet also stories of survival. As one resident put it: “We barely escaped. Our house is uninhabitable. Everything is broken or gone. We wait for help.”

As authorities continue rescue and relief operations, many in Bhaderwah and Doda remain stranded, awaiting food, shelter, and reassurance. The floods have left behind not only visible scars of destruction but also deep uncertainty about how long recovery will take. For now, survival is the priority, and rebuilding lives remains a distant hope.
