Delhi-NCR Braces for More Rain as Orange Alert Issued Amid Severe Waterlogging

Delhi-NCR Sees Heavy Rain, Orange Alert in Effect as Waterlogging Disrupts Traffic

Delhi-NCR woke up to heavy showers on Thursday morning, triggering severe waterlogging, traffic snarls, and slow-moving commutes across the capital and neighbouring cities. The India Meteorological Department (IMD), which had initially issued a red alert, downgraded it to orange by noon, but cautioned that more rain is on the way.

Roads in parts of Delhi, Noida, and Gurugram turned into mini streams, with vehicles struggling through knee-deep water in some areas. Commuters reported long delays as traffic crawled through major routes.

The fresh spells of rain come just days after a heavy downpour earlier this week in Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, and other parts of the National Capital Region, which also led to multiple flight delays and cancellations on Tuesday.

According to the IMD, “light to moderate rainfall at most places with moderate to heavy rainfall at isolated places” is expected in Delhi-NCR during the next few hours. The weather body has also issued alerts for heavy rainfall over Haryana, Chandigarh, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, north Madhya Pradesh, and west Uttar Pradesh.

Rainfall figures show how wet this year has been for the capital—an August 11 report revealed that Delhi has already received 706 mm of rain since January, which is over 91% of the normal annual rainfall mark of 774.4 mm.

Authorities have urged residents to remain alert, avoid waterlogged zones, and plan travel accordingly as the monsoon continues to grip the region.
