The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall across several parts of the country, urging residents to remain cautious and take preventive measures to avoid rain-related hazards.
According to the forecast, Assam, Meghalaya, and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal are expected to witness heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated extremely heavy spells in the coming days. Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, and Uttarakhand are also likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places.
Potential Risks and Precautions
The IMD has cautioned that intense rain may lead to flash floods, landslides, waterlogging, and river swelling in vulnerable areas. People living in low-lying zones, near rivers, or in weak structures are advised to relocate to safer places if necessary.
Authorities have specifically warned against using roadway underpasses, drainage ditches, and low-lying roads, as these can flood quickly and become extremely dangerous. Residents are also urged to stay away from power lines and electrical installations during storms.
“Kuchcha houses” — temporary or weakly built structures — are at high risk of collapsing during prolonged heavy rainfall. The IMD advises people in such homes to seek shelter in stronger buildings during the period of intense weather.
Motorists have been urged to drive cautiously and avoid waterlogged roads, as even shallow water can cause vehicles to stall or be swept away.
Safety and Preparedness Measures
To minimise the impact of the heavy rains, the IMD has recommended:
- Stay Informed: Monitor weather bulletins via television, radio, or mobile apps for real-time updates.
- Prepare Your Home: Clear drains and gutters to ensure proper water flow, and place important documents and valuables on higher shelves to prevent water damage.
- Avoid Flooded Areas: Do not attempt to walk or drive through floodwaters. Avoid going near rivers and streams, as water levels can rise suddenly.
Local authorities are on alert, and disaster management teams have been asked to remain ready for possible evacuation and rescue operations.
The IMD emphasised that public awareness and early action can save lives during extreme weather events. Citizens are urged to take the warnings seriously and follow official guidance.
