A Day of Horror Unfolds

Nature’s fury struck with a force Jammu had never imagined, leaving behind wreckage, sorrow, and flashes of courage. In the span of a single day, relentless rain turned roads into rivers and homes into islands. Local gauges reported intense downpours across the city—some areas recording up to 380 mm in 24 hours, far above seasonal norms, while others reeled under 150 mm that still proved ruinous.

Unprecedented Rains Shatter Records

380 mm Rainfall in 24 Hours

Through the afternoon, cloudbursts loaded the skies above Jammu. By evening, Tawi River swelled to 23 feet, pushing well past the danger mark and sending brown water surging through lanes. Half of the Science College campus vanished beneath the flood, laboratories and classrooms submerged in silt and silence.

Tawi River Overflows

As waters spilled their banks, Gujjar Nagar, Rajinder Nagar, Bhagwati Nagar, Talab Tillo, Trikuta Nagar, and Gandhi Nagar flooded in quick succession, turning market roads into channels of swift, debris-choked current.

Landslides Compound the Disaster

Bridges Collapse, City Cut Off

Critical Links Fail

The Tawi Fourth Bridge buckled under the torrent while the Baid Devta Metal Bridge at Nagrota Kattal Battal was torn away, severing vital routes just when ambulances needed them most.

Officials Confirm Historic Rainfall
Authorities confirmed that this was the heaviest rainfall since the 1950s, shattering decades-old records. Dozens of villages remained cut off as rescue teams cleared debris. Every passing hour brought new stories of grief—families missing, children swept away, and homes reduced to nothing but mud and wreckage.

Courage Amid Catastrophe

Yet amid the despair, stories of bravery emerged. Soldiers of the Army, along with NDRF, SDRF, and police, risked their lives in dangerous conditions to save thousands. They waded through floodwaters, cleared landslides, and carried stranded residents on their shoulders, proving that even in tragedy, courage shines brightest.

Jammu’s Darkest Flood in a Century

The floods of August 2025 will be remembered as Jammu’s darkest in a century—an event that destroyed homes, claimed lives, and shattered livelihoods. But they will also be remembered for the resilience of its people and the spirit of those who refused to give up, standing united against nature’s fury.
