Jammu, Sept 3 — A major section of the Fourth Tawi Bridge was severely damaged by floodwaters on Tuesday, forcing its closure and triggering massive traffic jams across alternate routes.

This is the second blow to the bridge in just over a week, raising serious concerns about infrastructure safety.

In Rajouri’s Sunderbani, a house collapse claimed two lives. In Akhnoor, around 40 villagers remain stranded as the Chenab River overflows. Rescue boats are in operation. Key roads, including stretches of the Srinagar–Jammu National Highway, are blocked due to landslides.

Local residents are on edge. “We didn’t sleep. The river kept rising, and we kept watching,” said Praduman Singh, whose home lies just 70 meters from the breach. Many families have moved elderly members and children to safer areas.

Landslides have cut off roads like Panjtirthi–Sidhra and Manda–Nagrota, complicating rescue logistics. Authorities urge people to avoid riverbanks and cooperate with emergency operations.

Heavy rainfall is expected to continue, with flash floods and landslides still posing a threat. Relief camps are active, and emergency helplines remain open.
