A week of unrelenting rain has turned large parts of Jammu & Kashmir into disaster zones, claiming 56 lives and leaving dozens missing. Landslides, cloudbursts, and flash floods have battered the region, cutting off highways, marooning villages, and plunging families into grief and uncertainty.

In Reasi district, heartbreak struck early Friday morning when a landslide buried a kaccha house, killing seven members of a single family—including five children aged just 4 to 12. Their bodies were recovered from the debris on Saturday, as rescue teams worked through the mud and rubble.

In Ramban, a violent cloudburst in the higher reaches of Rajgarh unleashed flash floods that swept away homes and lives. Four people were confirmed dead, and four others remain missing. Entire structures were washed off their foundations, leaving behind only broken walls and soaked memories.

“We heard the roar before we saw the water. Then everything was gone,” said a local resident, still searching for his neighbors.

The District Administration of Ramban has issued a fresh weather advisory, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall, thundershowers, and cloudburst risk from August 30 to September 2. Residents are urged to stay away from rivers, nallas, and unstable slopes, and to remain alert as conditions remain volatile.

Across the Union Territory, the death toll continues to rise—54 deaths reported from the Jammu division, and 2 from Kashmir. Rescue and relief operations are ongoing, but access remains difficult in many areas due to damaged roads and continued rainfall.
