Early in the morning of 14 August 2025, a peaceful pilgrimage to Machail Mata turned into a disaster occurred around noon to 1 p.m. on August 14, 2025, a sudden cloudburst hit Chasoti village in Kishtwar, Jammu & Kashmir.
Heavy rain poured down and caused flash floods and landslides. In just minutes, water and mud washed away a community kitchen, small shops, vehicles, and parts of the road. Pilgrims, locals, and security personnel were caught by surprise.
So far, over 40 people have lost their lives, more than 100 are injured, and over 200 are still missing. Rescue teams from the NDRF, SDRF, Indian Army, and local police are working day and night. They are facing broken bridges, blocked roads, and dangerous slopes. Helicopters are also helping to rescue people.Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah are monitoring the relief work.
