Early Monsoon Advance
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed on May 16 that the Southwest Monsoon 2026 has advanced ahead of schedule. By this date, rains had already reached the southeast Arabian Sea, the Bay of Bengal, the Andaman Sea, the Nicobar Islands, and parts of the Andaman Islands, including Sri Vijaya Puram.
IMD officials noted that conditions remain favourable for further progress. They expect the system to move deeper into the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal within the next three to four days. The remaining Andaman Islands and East Central Bay of Bengal should also see onset soon.
Kerala Onset Date
On May 15, the IMD announced that Kerala will receive monsoon rains on May 26, nearly a week earlier than the usual June 1 date. The arrival in Kerala traditionally marks the start of the June–September season. This period delivers nearly 70% of India’s annual rainfall and plays a vital role in agriculture, water supply, and the economy.
