Monsoon Rains Devastate South Asia: Over 250 Dead in Pakistan as Floods Worsen Climate Crisis

Severe monsoon rains across South Asia have killed more than 250 people in Pakistan and 120 in India, with widespread damage to crops and infrastructure. The crisis, fueled by climate change, has also triggered evacuations in China.

South Asia is reeling from deadly monsoon rains, with Pakistan bearing the brunt as the death toll surpasses 250. Weeks of torrential rain have triggered flash floods, destroyed vital crop fields, and stranded thousands of tourists across the country.

In India, central and north-western regions have seen continuous downpours since June, resulting in approximately 120 fatalities. Meanwhile, China’s southern and western provinces, particularly Yunnan, are battling mudslides and severe flooding. Emergency evacuations have been carried out, with coastal regions bracing for a relentless typhoon season.

The escalating human and economic toll of these disasters reflects a broader pattern of climate change-driven extreme weather events. As the atmosphere warms, it retains more moisture—about 7% more water for every degree Celsius of warming, intensifying rainfall and storm events.

According to the European earth observation agency, June 2025 was 1.3°C warmer than the estimated pre-industrial average. Over the past 12 months, global temperatures have averaged 1.55°C above pre-industrial levels. While this spike hasn’t officially breached the Paris climate accord’s 1.5°C threshold—which is assessed over at least two decades—it signals growing urgency for climate action.
