Tawi River Swells After Heavy Rainfall in Udhampur

“The Tawi is flowing dangerously close to the warning mark after intense overnight rain in upstream areas. We are monitoring the situation closely,” a local official stated early this morning.

As the much-awaited monsoon sweeps across northern and central India, the region is finally breathing a sigh of relief from the relentless heatwave that had gripped it for weeks. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), rainfall is now intensifying, particularly across states like Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and parts of Jammu & Kashmir.

In Jammu, however, the welcome rains have also raised fresh concerns.

Tawi River Swells After Heavy Rainfall in Udhampur
Due to persistent and heavy downpours in the Udhampur district, the water level in the Tawi River has risen sharply, triggering alerts in low-lying areas of Jammu city. Authorities are urging residents—especially those near the riverbanks—to stay vigilant and avoid venturing close to the swollen river.

Local disaster response teams are on standby, and sandbag embankments are being reinforced at vulnerable spots along the river.

Travel & Safety Advisory
People traveling through or within Jammu are advised to:

  • Avoid crossing footbridges or low-lying routes near the river.
  • Stay updated through IMD alerts and local news.
  • Refrain from unnecessary travel during heavy rain warnings.

While the monsoon brings the much-needed cool relief, it’s also a time to exercise caution. The beauty of the season comes hand-in-hand with the power of nature.

Stay safe. Stay informed.
