Tropical Storm Iona Forms in Central Pacific, May Strengthen to Hurricane

Tropical Storm Iona winds initially reached 40 mph. formed Sunday evening in the Central Pacific Ocean, south of Hawaii.

Tropical Storm Iona formed Sunday evening in the Central Pacific Ocean, south of Hawaii. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) reported that Iona’s winds initially reached 40 mph, qualifying it as a tropical storm.

As of now, Iona is located about 960 miles southeast of Honolulu and is moving west at 10 mph. The storm has since strengthened, with current sustained winds at 50 mph.

According to the NHC, Iona is expected to continue gaining strength and could become a hurricane by Monday night. However, weakening is likely by Tuesday.

Tropical storms have sustained winds between 39 and 73 mph. A system becomes a hurricane when winds exceed 74 mph.

While Iona currently poses no immediate threat to land, residents in Hawaii and surrounding areas are advised to monitor official updates.
